Parties, Events & Fun @ SES San Jose 2005

When SES began, the big event was the cocktail reception at the end of the first day. Then people usually grouped up and headed off to dinner in different directions. These days, it's a dizzying collection of parties and events that are on offer. I wanted to highlight a few such as the traditional Google Dance, the brand new Yahoo Search Night Off, the Ask Jeeves "Dan Band" Opening Night Bash plus tell you how to find more.

The Google Dance

For those not familiar, the Google Dance originally referred to the how Google used to do a roughly monthly update of its index that resulted in changes to rankings. The movement of sites within these rankings got dubbed the "Google Dance" by those at WebmasterWorld.

Google embraced the term when it decided to throw a party for SES San Jose 2002. It bused attendees down to its old campus where there was music, drinks and yes -- dancing! You can see pictures from the very first 2002 dance here. The next year, the event moved to Google's new digs even though Googlers themselves hadn't moved in. There was even a nice couch to relax on, as you'll see in these pictures. There's a story about that couch. To find out if someone's a true SES veteran, ask them if they know what happened to it!

Last year, the event got even larger, complete with a Google Village, as you'll see in these pictures. For 2005, the Dance is back with yet another new feature, Meet The Google Engineers. What's that? A chance to ask Google's engineers from both the editorial and ad sides any questions you may have. So get to the dance on the evening of August 9! More information can be found here.

Yahoo Search Night Off

Earlier this year, I tried to rally people behind the idea of Search Marketing Day, when all search marketers would declare a day off. After all, the industry continues to grow and grow, with an ever increasing number of things to keep ahead of.

Sadly, a vote to pick a date didn't reach a consensus. OK, I'm going to try again later. In the meantime, Yahoo has heard my cry and that of other search marketers. After a long day at SES, they declared the evening of August 8 will be "Search Night Off."

To help everyone celebrate, Yahoo's booked Paramount's Great America amusement park. Bring on the roller coasters! More information on the even can be found here.

Ask Jeeves "Dan Band" Opening Night Bash

At our New York show last year, Ask Jeeves booked American Idol star William Hung to come sing to a party it hosted for a relatively small group of attendees.

The music is back for San Jose, but this time powered by the The Dan Band of Old School fame and accessible to any SES attendee. It happens on August 8, just after the Yahoo event. More details via the Ask Jeeves blog here.

And More Events!

There are even more things happening at SES San Jose. The special events page on the conference web site shows activities where sponsors have paid to get the word out in front of attendees about various activities, so check 'em out!

Beyond these, the SES San Jose 2005: Parties, Events & Gatherings thread at our SEW Forums has a running list of many more. There's also an at-a-glance guide at the forums to parties and events that forum moderator Joseph Morin has compiled, with things listed by time.

Have a great time!
